Meet our Wonderful Team!

Tim.PNG

Kia ora koutou,

It is an honour and pleasure to work with such a great team of people that help to create a positive environment that is supportive, collaborative and open to new ideas. The level of commitment shown by teachers and staff from all departments in the school is clearly on display when you walk through the corridors and into the classrooms. We are a small, family-oriented community, which allows our teachers and staff to have a personalised approach to their work and deliver excellent service provision.

Families at NZSJ should feel a sense of belonging in a community that is supportive and responsive. Our students are at the heart of our community and their engagement and commitment to learning resonates throughout the school. Their desire to understand the world and explore new ideas and concepts with curiosity and an open mind keeps us striving forward as we guide them through their educational journey.

Tim Maitland, Head of School

“After spending ten great years in Early Years education both in National Plus (Indonesian) and international settings, I can unequivocally say teaching in Early Years is my calling. I feel very privileged to be working with a fantastic team of committed professionals in such a great learning environment. At NZSJ, every child gets to learn in a fun and engaging way. This is at the heart of everything we do!”

I am so excited to be a part of this amazing academic team and among these incredible, fascinating students at New Zealand School Jakarta. I grew up in a small town in Michigan, USA. I graduated in 2010 with a BA in Elementary Education and English and am currently working on an MA in Reading to become a Reading Specialist. After graduating in 2010, I moved to South Korea to teach ESL for four years. This is my sixth year teaching in various schools in Indonesia. I have taught grades 11-12 in English and Drama, and grades 2-5 in primary schools here. My passions are helping students meet their literacy goals, dancing with my students, and physical education.

Ms. Kate, Primary Teacher

With 21 years of teaching, I have wonderful experience and knowledge of helping children to flourish in the classroom. I am especially passionate about literacy, the performing arts, visual art and the running of school arts events. I am very excited to be part of the wonderful community and teaching staff of NZSJ.

Ms. Mari, Secondary Teacher

Hi Everyone! My name is Ms. Mari and I am from the US. I was born in California, lived in 14 states and been to all 49 continental states. I have 3 adult children, all doing wonderful things with their lives. I have been teaching overseas since 2012, and have taught in Czech, Taiwan, Turkey and Albania.

I have spent time visiting and learning about Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Germany, South Africa, Mozambique, England, and Mexico to name a few. I adore both teaching and learning! I can’t think of any topic that doesn’t interest me on some level. I am working on my Master’s in Education and appreciate every second (minus the deadlines!). I have an Associates in Photonics Technologies and a Bachelor’s in Education K8, with a TESOL license and a TEFL certificate. I was a certified and licensed personal fitness and water fitness trainer for just over 10 years, up until I began teaching overseas. I worked summer music festivals as a face-painter and tie-dye-er (!!) leading up to the festival season for 5 years (my favourite was the Roswell UFO Festival).

I enjoy reading, painting, dancing, exercising, writing, baking, face-painting, being silly and exploring our amazing world. As storytelling is the original form of education, I like to tell stories, hear stories, perform stories, and create stories. I prefer hands-on learning that allows students to make sense of what they are learning and how it can be applied in real life. I like projects that give students both knowledge and experience. Exploring how each student’s unique experiences and perceptions bring a more full understanding to learning and the classroom is my favourite. I think that being an active positive member of society means being my best self and trying to do whatever is possible to help the community be its best.
